Remember how Spotify revolutionized music streaming, by bringing record labels onboard and deliver the ultimate music platform? The same is now happening with official vehicle data APIs, and Gridio is now at the forefront of official smart charging of EVs!
đźš— Electric vehicle charging is going through a major transformation - thanks to official APIs from companies
Think of car manufacturers like the old-school record labels. They’ve owned the EV charging experience through their (often clunky) apps. When we started Gridio four years ago, we wanted to help EV drivers charge when electricity was the cheapest and cleanest. But the only way to do that was to replicate what drivers could do manually: stop charging during expensive hours and restart when prices dropped, often reverse-engineering car apps.
That’s how the Gridio app was born. Like Napster once made music accessible, we made smart charging accessible - letting drivers automate what was once a manual, middle-of-the-night task. But, as many users know, early versions were a bit rough - like a live bootleg with questionable sound. You got the idea, but not always the experience.
⚡️That’s changing - with car company-backed data powering Gridio
Just like Spotify got record labels onboard by showing that more listeners meant more revenue, we now use official API integrations with car companies -enabling a seamless and robust smart charging automatically, based on energy tariffs and solar output. That’s not a priority for most manufacturers. But for us at Gridio, it’s everything.
We’ve now gone from sometimes-unreliable, reverse-engineered connections (think: a Škodas GPS randomly showin in Moscow instead of Copenhagen, Tesla commands not going through, BMW hitting rate limits etc) to official API partnerships with the likes of Tesla, BMW, MINI, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen Group (coming soon) - brands that together represent over 50% of new EVs.
Our model is remarkably similar to Spotify. Gridio helps EV drivers save on energy by charging when prices are low or the sun is shining🔋. We take a small cut of those savings by offering Gridio smart charging to drivers, energy utilities and fleet operators, and carmakers earn a share by giving us robust, real-time data access.
At Gridio, we’ve always believed that EVs- especially with their big batteries - are key to a smarter, cleaner grid. Cars should charge when demand is low, clean electricity output high, and prices cheap. Soon, they’ll even discharge when the grid needs power.
Now, with direct data access from car companies, this vision becomes reality.
Carmakers win by making EVs cheaper to own and more delightful to drive. Energy suppliers win by saving customers money and balancing the grid more efficiently. And EV drivers? They just plug in - and Gridio does the rest.
