Smart EV charging

See how Gridio charges your EV smarter

Connect your solar inverter once. Gridio reads your live output, waits for surplus, and charges your car automatically — no scheduling needed.

Charging starts the moment you plug in

This is how most EVs charge by default — immediately, at whatever the current grid price is, before your solar day has even started.

Battery level Solar output Grid charging Gridio waits

Grid charging by default

Most EVs charge immediately when plugged in, regardless of the time of day or what your solar panels are doing. That means peak-price grid electricity in the evening, and your daytime solar surplus exported at low feed-in rates.

Typical result: expensive evening grid energy, solar surplus wasted.

What changes with Gridio

How it connects
Your inverter, your EV, one app — no hardware
Solar inverter Gridio reads your real-time solar output via cloud API SolarEdge · SMA · Fronius · Huawei · Growatt · Solax · Solis · Sungrow + more
Gridio app Calculates surplus solar and decides when to charge — automatically iOS & Android · No hardware needed
Your EV Gridio controls charge start, stop, and speed via official API Audi · BMW · CUPRA · KIA · Mercedes-Benz · MINI · SEAT · Škoda · Tesla · Volkswagen
How it works Gridio charges when your solar is producing — not when electricity is expensive A typical 24-hour cycle: Gridio waits out peak prices, charges cheaply overnight, then maximises your solar surplus through the day.

Continuous modulation

Tesla · all models

Gridio adjusts charging power every few minutes to precisely match your solar output. Every watt of available surplus goes into your battery.

Tracks solar precisely
6AM12PM6PM

Charging power follows solar kW for kW — the most efficient mode available.

Smart switching

VW · Skoda · Cupra · Seat

Your car supports two power levels. Gridio switches between reduced (~8A) and full (~16A) based on solar surplus — two steps, perfectly timed.

~5.5kW ~11kW ~5.5kW
6AM12PM6PM

Best on 3-phase 11 kW chargers. Works via Cariad/VW Group API.

Smart start & stop

BMW · Hyundai · Kia · Mercedes · Renault + more

Gridio starts charging when solar exceeds your threshold and pauses when it drops. Fully automatic — your car charges only when the sun delivers enough.

Charging ON Threshold

Works with any charger or wall socket. No hardware changes needed.

Manual vs Gridio Stop guessing. Start charging smart.
Without Gridio
With Gridio
You manually set a timer and hope the sun comes out at the right time
Gridio reads your live solar output and starts charging automatically when there's surplus
On cloudy days your EV pulls from the grid at expensive evening rates anyway
When it's cloudy, Gridio falls back to the cheapest overnight grid hours automatically
Surplus solar gets exported back to the grid for a tiny feed-in rate — often under 5 ct/kWh
Your solar goes into your car's battery instead — worth 3–5x more than the export rate
You need a CT clamp or smart meter installed to see how much surplus you have
No hardware needed — Gridio reads your inverter's cloud API directly. Set up in minutes.
No hardware needed Why not just use your charger's built-in solar mode? Many smart wallboxes offer solar charging with a CT clamp. Here's how Gridio compares.
Feature Smart charger + CT clamp Gridio
Reads solar production Via CT clamp hardwareRequires a physical sensor on your fuse box Via your inverter cloud APINo hardware — reads data your inverter already publishes

Frequently asked questions

Who is Gridio's solar charging for?

Around a half of EV drivers have their own solar panels at home. Gridio's solar charging magically connects to both your EV and solar inverter, without any need for a hardware setup and enables you to enjoy your EV automatically charging if you have sufficient solar available.

What is the benefit of solar charging?

With solar booming, nowadays when you export your solar energy, you get paid very little or nothing, or even charged by negative prices.

Charging your EV when your solar runs 'hot' is a perfect way to maximise your solar self-consumption. On the one hand you do not export low-value solar and in addition you have to buy less or no additional energy later to get your car charged.

As a bonus - when you solar charge, you also do not have to pay grid fees later when you would have otherwise charged your car at night.

Which solar inverter brands does Gridio support?

We currently support the following inverters: SolarEdge, SMA, Fronius, Huawei, Ferroamp, Growatt, Kostal, Sofar, Solax, Solis, Sungrow and we're constantly adding more!

Should your inverter not be on the list, then be sure to drop a message to support@gridio.io and we will do our best to add it soon!

How does solar charging by Gridio work in practice?

After you've paired your EV and inverter in the app, Gridio prioritises charging during solar hours over regular smart charging.

For most brands, Gridio modulates the EV power to match the solar output or excess (see below), so when there is little sun we charge more slowly and when there's more, we power up your EV faster!

Today, only Tesla supports perfect modulation, so for other brands we ask you to tell us, how much solar you like to see produced / exported before we kick-start your EV charging - to ensure, we do not trigger too many grid imports when they are not necessary.

Does Gridio account for grid exports?

If you inverter is connected to your smart meter, we will optimize based on your actual export data. So when you turn on your oven, then we also charge your EV more slowly if not enough solar is available.

If your inverter is not connected to your smart-meter, have no fear! We ask you to enter your typical home load (1-2kW), so we manually estimate your excess solar availability.

Sounds exciting - how can I get started?

All you need to do is in the Gridio app, pair your EV (if you've not already done so) and the from Connections also add your solar inverter. Answer the simple set up questions, and you can be solar charging in minutes!
