For drivers of Volkswagen, Audi, Škoda, CUPRA, and SEAT, smart charging just got a meaningful upgrade. Gridio has completed the full rollout of official smart charging integrations across all VW Group brands, ahead of VW Group closing down the unofficial reverse-engineered API access that many smart charging providers have relied on.
This is not just a technical switch. It is a fundamental improvement in how your car and Gridio work together.
Until now, Gridio (like most smart charging apps) connected to VW Group cars through an unofficial, reverse-engineered API. It worked, but it came with real limitations: outages whenever VW updated their apps, limited data reliability, and no official support channel when things went wrong.
VW Group has now shut down that unofficial access. Going forward, only providers with official API partnerships can offer smart charging for VW Group cars.
Gridio is one of them.
Our integration is built on the official API products provided by VW Group Information Services. That means a more stable connection, faster data, and a direct support line with the VW team if anything needs resolving.
If you are already using Gridio, you do not need to do anything. The switch happens automatically on our end. You will simply notice that things work better.
Here is what improves:
Each brand has its own dedicated page with step-by-step connection instructions and FAQs:
VW Group's decision to close unofficial API access is part of a broader shift happening across the automotive industry. Car manufacturers are building their own data and connectivity platforms, and they are moving toward controlled, contractual access for third parties.
For drivers, this is good news. Official integrations mean more accountability, better data quality, and clearer ownership of the connection between your car and the apps you use.
Gridio currently offers official smart charging integrations with 12 EV manufacturers. VW Group completing this transition brings five more brands fully into that ecosystem.
